Pacifiers Come With Issues!
Dr. New Doctor's Name Blogs from 2012
It has been recommended that pacifiers be cleansed daily in a denture-cleaning solution to cut down on bacterial contamination that occurs with regular use. How ironic, clean your dentures and pacifiers with the same stuff!
Joking aside, pacifiers become porous after a week or two of use and, at that point, can really harbor all those nasty contaminants. Many different (hundreds) of bacteria, molds and fungi have been cultured from pacifiers. Some of these are true “pathogens” (ie. cause real disease) in terms of autoimmune disorders, heart disease, intestinal and respiratory illness. A “biofilm” of bacteria, etc., develops on the pacifier that is difficult to remove and can cause inflammation in the upper airway and elsewhere.
Not to overdo the issues, but it also a cause of ear infections. The mechanics of pacifier use in an infant or toddler can introduce these bacteria into the middle ear through the eustachian tube. Furthermore, it can result in an overbite/crossbite which may require orthodontic correction. The third problem is speech delay, particularly (and obviously) articulation delay.
Some advocates do support their use for a short time prior to 6 months of age to help a “fussy” baby….however, we should first be sure the “colic” is not from the pacifier itself!
